We are one of the largest coal producers in the United States. At December 31,
2007, we operated 18 active mines located in each of the major low-sulfur
coal-producing regions of the United States. Federal and state environmental
regulations affect the demand for certain types of coal by limiting the amount
of sulfur dioxide that may be emitted as a result of combustion. Due to these
regulations, we believe demand for low-sulfur coal exceeds demand for other
types of coal. Consequently, we focus on mining, processing and marketing coal
with low sulfur content. At December 31, 2007, we estimate that our proven and
probable coal reserves had an average heat value of approximately 10,000 Btus
and an average sulfur content of approximately 0.71%. As such, we estimate that
approximately 75.4% of our proven and probable coal reserves consists of
compliance coal.
We sell substantially all of our coal to power plants, steel mills and
