The Company was founded in 1894 as Orange County Title Company, succeeding to
the business of two title abstract companies founded in 1889 and operating in
Orange County, California. In 1924, the Company began issuing title insurance
policies. In 1986, the Company began a diversification program which involved
the acquisition and development of business information companies closely
related to the real estate transfer and closing process. In 1998, the Company
expanded its diversification program to include business information products
and services outside of the real estate transfer and closing process.
On January 15, 2008, the Company announced its intention to spin-off its
financial services companies, consisting primarily of its title insurance and
specialty insurance reporting segments, into a separate public company to be
called First American Financial Corporation. ...
