About:The Nasdaq Composite Index represents nearly every stock traded on the Nasdaq exchange. Alongside the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500, it is among the three most widely tracked benchmarks of the U.S. equity market. Because of Nasdaq’s focus on innovation-driven companies, the index carries a strong weighting toward the technology sector. Within it, the Nasdaq-100—a subset containing the 100 largest non-financial firms listed on Nasdaq—makes up roughly 80 percent of the Composite’s total value. The index is capitalization-weighted, meaning that each company’s impact on the index is proportional to its market size. To determine the index level, the closing price of each component stock is multiplied by its assigned share count, and all those values are summed. That total is then divided by a standardizing divisor, which keeps the index values within a manageable range for comparison and tracking over time.
